Boo-tiful Stained Glass! A Spooky Halloween Craft for Kids
Bring a little Halloween magic to your classroom or homeschool with this easy stained glass craft using black construction paper, colorful tissue paper, and a some fun cutting and pasting!
There is something magical about a classroom in October. The excitement of Fall is in the air in many places in the world. For those schools who celebrate Halloween, (you'd be surprised how many countries do, not just in the English-speaking world), imaginations are running wild, and even the simplest activities can turn into wonderful memories.

This Halloween stained glass craft for kids was one of my favorite classroom traditions over the years. My students loved creating colorful tissue paper decorations that transformed our classroom windows into spooky works of art!
With a little black construction paper, colorful tissue paper, and some creative cutting and pasting, our ordinary classroom windows were transformed into a gallery of glowing Halloween artwork!
And the best part? Every creation was different.
Some were bright and cheerful. Others were mysterious and spooky. But each one was a little masterpiece, proudly displayed for everyone to admire.
Today, I'm sharing this favorite classroom tradition, along with free printable Halloween stained glass templates, so teachers and parents at home can create a little Halloween magic of their own!
A Spook-tacular Classroom Tradition
One of the things I loved most about teaching was finding ways to combine learning with creativity.
Halloween was the perfect opportunity!
In my classroom, we often celebrated the season by writing spooky poems, imaginative Halloween stories, and tales filled with mysterious sounds, friendly ghosts, and things that went bump in the night.
Once our young writers had finished putting their spooky thoughts onto paper, it was time to give those creative minds another outlet.
Out came the scissors, glue, black construction paper, and colorful tissue paper!
My students loved making these stained glass windows, and I loved watching their personalities shine through their creations.
When we finished, we decorated our classroom windows with their artwork. The sunlight streaming through the tissue paper made the colors glow, creating a beautiful Halloween display.
It was amazing how a few simple supplies could transform our classroom into something so festive.
And, of course, what better way to celebrate our spooky writing and artwork than with a nice cup of hot chocolate?
Just one important warning to my little artists:
Be careful not to spill your hot chocolate on your masterpiece! ☕🎃

Halloween Stained Glass Craft for Kids: How It Works
Don't worry! There is no actual glass involved in this project.
This kid-friendly Halloween craft uses black construction paper to create a silhouette or frame, while colorful tissue paper fills the openings.
When the finished artwork is taped to a window, natural light shines through the tissue paper, creating an effect similar to stained glass.
It's an inexpensive, colorful, and engaging activity that works especially well for elementary students.
I've included three spooky designs to get everyone started:
Spooky Owl Eyes: Mysterious eyes and shapes that look especially striking against the light.
Jack-o'-Lantern: A smiling pumpkin with fun facial features and curved cutouts.
Witch's Hat: A classic Halloween hat ready to be filled with magical colors.
Children can choose their favorite design or create several to decorate an entire window.
Supplies You'll Need
The beauty of this activity is that you probably already have most of the supplies in your classroom or craft cabinet.

Black construction paper or cardstock
Colorful tissue paper
Child-safe scissors

Glue stick or school glue
Tape for displaying finished artwork
Teacher tip: Prepare tissue paper pieces ahead of time for younger students, or let children tear their own pieces for extra fine-motor practice.
How to Make Your Spooky Stained Glass Windows
Ready to create some Halloween magic? Here's how!
Step 1: Print Your Templates
Print the Halloween stained glass templates on regular white paper.
Carefully cut out the shapes along the dotted lines. Younger children may need help with the smaller openings.
Step 2: Place the Template on Black Paper
Lay the paper template on top of black construction paper or cardstock.
Step 3: Trace Your Cutouts
Trace around the cutout openings with a pencil. These will become the spaces where your colorful tissue paper will shine through.
Carefully cut out the traced openings in the black paper, leaving the surrounding paper intact to create your stained glass frame.
Step 4: Add Colorful Tissue Paper
Turn the black construction paper over.
Glue or paste pieces of colorful tissue paper across the openings on the back of the paper.
Here's where the real fun begins!
It's perfectly OK to overlap the tissue paper. In fact, I encourage it!
Layering different colors creates interesting new shades and makes every project unique.
Step 5: Let Your Artwork Dry
Set your creation aside until the glue has dried.
Patience, my little witches and wizards! Your masterpiece is almost ready!
Step 6: Let the Halloween Magic Shine!
Tape your finished artwork to a classroom window or a window at home.
Watch what happens when the sunlight shines through your colorful creation!
Enjoy your spooky decorations throughout the Halloween season. And when evening arrives, notice how the appearance changes as the sunlight fades.
For the best glowing stained glass effect, display your artwork where daylight can shine through it.
A Little Halloween Science: What Happens When Colors Overlap?
One of my favorite things about this craft is that it offers a wonderful opportunity to introduce a little science without making it feel like a science lesson.
As students begin overlapping their tissue paper, ask:
"What happens when two colors overlap and the sunlight shines through?"
Let them experiment!
Try overlapping:
Yellow and red tissue paper. Do you see orange?
Blue and red tissue paper. Does the overlap look purple?
Blue and yellow tissue paper. Can you discover a shade of green?
The results may vary depending on the tissue paper, but that's part of the fun!
Encourage children to make predictions before trying different combinations.
Which colors allow the most light to pass through? What happens when you add another layer? Do some colors look darker than others?
Suddenly, a simple Halloween art project becomes an opportunity to explore light, color, observation, and discovery.
Who knew Halloween could be so educational?
Pair This Halloween Craft With Spooky Creative Writing
As much as I enjoyed decorating our classroom windows, I especially loved combining this project with creative writing.
Before making our stained glass decorations, my students often wrote spooky poems or Halloween stories.
It was a wonderful way to let their imaginations run wild!
You can recreate this experience in your classroom or homeschool by inviting children to write about their Halloween creations.
Here are a few writing prompts to get those creative juices flowing:
The Mysterious Owl
"Late one Halloween night, I looked out my window and saw two glowing eyes..."
The Magical Witch's Hat
"I found a witch's hat sitting on my doorstep. When I put it on, something amazing happened..."
The Talking Jack-o'-Lantern
"Everything was quiet until the pumpkin on our porch suddenly whispered..."
Younger students can draw pictures and dictate their stories, while older students can create longer narratives or spooky poems.
Once the writing and artwork are complete, consider displaying them together.
Imagine a classroom filled with colorful Halloween windows and the imaginative stories that inspired them!
It's a wonderful celebration of both art and literacy.
A Cozy Halloween Celebration With Hot Chocolate
Of course, no spooky classroom celebration would be complete without a little something special.
One of my favorite memories is pairing our Halloween writing and crafting activities with a cozy cup of hot chocolate.
After all that hard work, it was a delightful treat!
For teachers and homeschool families, a little Halloween celebration can be as simple as sharing spooky poems, admiring everyone's artwork, and enjoying a warm drink together.
Use covered cups when possible, keep drinks away from the craft table, and check for allergies and school food policies before serving treats.
And remember my very important classroom rule:
Hot chocolate is for drinking, not for decorating your stained glass windows! Actually, I was usually the one spilling things. Luckily, not on their artwork. To my horror, one memory I have is knocking my coffee cup accidently across my desk and soaking a pile of student papers. I was saved by the fact that they were all printed copies ready for our wall, and the only downside was that I had to reprint them all. The kids had a blast laughing. It's good when they see us as human.
Why Teachers and Homeschool Parents Will Love This Activity
Beyond the Halloween fun, this craft offers several valuable learning opportunities.
Fine Motor Skills: Cutting, tearing, arranging, and pasting tissue paper help young learners practice coordination and control.
Creativity and Self-Expression: Children can experiment with different colors and patterns to make their artwork their own.
Science Exploration: Layering tissue paper encourages discoveries about color mixing and the way light passes through translucent materials.
Literacy Connections: Pairing the craft with spooky poems or stories gives students another reason to write and share their ideas.
Classroom Community: Displaying everyone's creations together helps children feel proud of their work and contributes to a festive learning environment.
And for homeschool families, it's a wonderful way to combine art, science, and writing into one enjoyable autumn afternoon.

Creating Memories, One Spooky Window at a Time
Looking back on my years in the classroom, it's often the simple activities I remember most fondly.
Not the elaborate projects or perfectly planned lessons, but the moments when students were happily creating, laughing, experimenting, and proudly showing off their work.
Our Halloween stained glass windows were one of those traditions.
Year after year, class after class, the excitement was always there.
I can still picture those colorful tissue paper creations brightening our classroom windows, with spooky poems and imaginative stories adding to the Halloween atmosphere.
I hope this activity brings just as much joy to your classroom or home.
So gather your supplies, pour yourself a cup of hot chocolate, and get ready for a little spooky creativity!
Happy Halloween, and happy crafting!
